Trip Overview

The Khumbhu region of Nepal which is also referred as the Everest region is particularly famous for the trekking to the world’s highest mountain but this region doesn’t only include that. The Gokyo valley is a second to none if you are looking for a place with awesome sceneries and magnificent landscapes all around you. A trek to Gokyo valley simply means to visit the awe-inspiring Gokyo Lakes and a triumphant hike to the ever present Gokyo-Ri.

Our 14 days Gokyo Valley Trek follows a trekking trail into the Everest region that has blend of natural beauty and adventure. We shall start from the lone airstrip of Lukla and then on follow the trails onward to the Dudh Koshi Valley. Moving from Lukla we reach the traditional local village of Phakding and as we ascend further, we shall cross several suspension bridges to finally arrive at the Sherpa town of Namche Bazaar, a surprisingly large town than you would imagine atop at this altitude. For acclimatization purposes, we shall take one day rest at Namche Bazaar before moving further on to higher altitudes. Acclimatizing here gives trekkers an opportunity to take a time out from our strenuous trek to calmly explore this town and visit some places. Subsequent to Namche Bazaar, the next day we shall you divert from the classic route heading up the Dudh Koshi valley before making a turn ahead to go in the direction of Gokyo valley. Walking next to the moraines of Ngozumpa Glacier and shimmering lakes, we shall make our way to our lodge in Gokyo for the overnight stay. The following day, we make our attempt to climb Gokyo Ri (5,360m) where trekkers can witness a sight of all the region’s 8000-metre peaks which include the dominant Mt. Everest (8,848 m), Mt. Lhotse (8,516 m), Mt. Makalu (8,485 m) and Mt. Cho Oyu (8,201m). Observing this grand sight with breathtaking sceneries, we shall now descent down to Gokyo valley and later start descending further down to Lukla via Namche Bazaar. Later on we shall end our trek with a scenic flight from Lukla to Kathmandu on the 13th day for your onward flight back home the next day.

Itinerary

Day 01: Kathmandu Arrival at TIA and Transfer to KTM hotel

Arrive in Kathmandu and complete the formalities in the customs and immigration, and you will be welcomed by representative from Adventure Master Treks & Expedition at the airport. After that you shall be escorted to the hotel for your stay in Kathmandu where you shall enjoy a much needed rest after your long journey to Nepal. In the afternoon you may stroll around the streets of Thamel and enjoy authentic Nepalese dish in the evening. Stay overnight at Kathmandu.

Day 02: Kathmandu to Lukla (2810m) by flight and Trek to Phakding (2652m) 3 hrs

Today we shall start our trek to the glorious valley of Gokyo by leaving Kathmandu. We shall take a scenic flight to the Khumbhu region which passes above the spectacular green hills, torrential river. With the vistas of the sparkling majestic mountains, we shall reach to the Tenzing-Hillary Airport located at Lukla. After our exhilarating flight we shall make some further arrangements to begin our trekking towards Phakding. To help our body acclimatize we shall do a short trek accompanied by the Dudh Koshi River all along the trail through the prosperous Lukla village to our final destination for the day to Phakding village. Later on we shall descend downward to Chauri Kharka and take a steady climb up the Dudh Koshi valley to arrive at the small village of Phakding at an elevated altitude of 2,610 meters above sea level. Stay overnight at Phakding.

Day 03: Phakding to Namche Bazaar (3446 m) 5-6 hrs

Waking up with the first glorious sunshine gleaming among the green hills today we shall have our breakfast and afterward traverse through the impenetrable forests subjugated by pine trees all over along with breathtaking vistas of the Himalayan Mountains above the tree line. Along the trail today, we shall walk past stunning gorges, several suspension bridges over the torrential rivers as we try to make our way to the unofficial capital town of Namche Bazaar. Here onward the section of trail becomes adorned with numerous prayer flag as move forward along the torrential Dudh Koshi River and reach at Monjo, the entry point of Sagarmatha National Park. Here, our trekking permits will be checked by the government officials and later walk further in to arrive at the village of Jorsale. After couple of hours of walking and crossing some of the last awe-inspiring suspension bridges of this spectacular region, we shall climb on a wide switchback trail to lastly reach the popular Sherpa town of Namche Bazaar. The vibrant Namche Bazaar has traditional shops and markets, souvenir shops, museums, cafes and restaurants among the others. In addition occasionally, from here we shall also have the view of mountains including the majestic Mt. Everest, Mt. Lhotse and other peaks. Stay overnight at Namche Bazaar.

Day 04: Acclimatization in Namche Bazaar/ Syangboche (3880m) Excursion and back to Namche Bazaar.

Every trekker who makes it to Namche Bazaar is generally recommended to spend at least one day for acclimatization purposes. Hence, today we have set aside this entire day for our body to get adjusted to the climatic conditions at this kind of high altitude. Namche Bazaar is often called as the ideal place where the bodies of trekkers have enough free time to acclimatize before heading forward with their trek. But this doesn’t mean that you can’t do some activities during your stay so you have plenty of options for exploration as well in Namche Bazaar. Trekkers can carry out the side trip to Syangboche which lies atop of Namche Bazaar and provides trekkers with the tremendous views of the Himalayas like the all present Mt. Everest along with other peaks. Syangboche can be reached by an hour’s walk from Namche Bazaar. Later trekkers may return back to their lodge for the night remaining. Day 05: Namche Bazaar to Dole (4200m) via Khumjung 6 hrs

Get your boots on, as we have a long hike up to Dole which is a small village located just north of Khumjung. After finishing our breakfast, we shall now trek further on from Namche Bazaar and rise up to the small village of Kyangjuma. From this place trekkers are offered with the views of Mt. Ama Dablam (6,856 m), Mt. Thamserku (6,808 m) and Mt. Katenga (6,685 m). Step by step we shall ascend up the path which later on gives a way to a village where collection of lodges can be seen with a dramatic view of snow covered mountains all around the village. Further we shall pass through the dense forests that have rhododendron, fir and birch after descending down the length of the Dudh Koshi River. Later on we shall trek further our trail ahead to reach small settlements like Tongba and Gyele to reach the village community of Dole which lies at an altitude of 4,038 meters above sea level. Upon reaching here trekkers can get the outstanding views of Mt. Thamserku and Mt. Kantega. Stay overnight at Dole.

Day 06: Dole to Machhermo (4470m) 5 hrs

After making our long way to the village settlement of Dole, we shall now wake up and have our breakfast in our lodge. Then after we shall move further on to our next destination of Machhermo which is a small local village located in the Dudh Koshi River valley. Heading north we shall have a comparatively short trek today as we initially go by the settlements of Lhabarma and the gorgeous looking Luza village situated alongside our planned trails. As time moves on so as shall we go up steadily on the first section of our trek and traverse all the way through the picturesque ridge above Dole. Advancing alongside our trail today we shall have the prospect to travel around through the indigenous communities living in the Luza village. Now we shall make a final ascend ahead the trail to get ahead of some small communities and grimy paths to reach our final destination Machhermo located just in between Dole and Gokyo. Macchermo village lies at an altitude of 4,470 meters above the sea level where you can take rest for the remaining day. Stay overnight at Machhermo.

Day 07: Machhermo to Gokyo Lake (4790m) 5 hrs

By the end of this day, we shall reach the vicinity of Gokyo Lake which is the highlight of our entire trek. Our efforts all the way to here have been just to get to this lake. So we wake up with an enthusiasm and have our breakfast as usual. In the following day, we plan to ascend the famous viewpoint of Gokyo Ri so we need to reach Gokyo Lake today as planned in our scheduled itinerary. In the beginning of our trek we shall head north and follow the trails with incredible sceneries along the entire route and ascend from the village of Machhermo. The first phase of our trek today shall land us at the settlement of Phangka village, moving on from here we shall witness the sight of valley getting much wider and bigger ahead of us. Further, we shall now climb down in the direction of the river which is later on pursued by a vertical climb to the amazing moraine created by the Ngozamba Glacier. After reaching here we shall begin crossing the moraines before being greeted by the “Iron Bridge” so as to mark the entrance point of Gokyo Lake Valley. The village of Gokyo where we are bound to spend the night and have some food lies on the outskirts nearby the third lake. So now we have reached our final destination for the day. Stay overnight at Gokyo.

Day 08: Trek to Gokyo - Ri (5,340) in the morning / Walk around the Gokyo Lake in the afternoon

Get ready and be pumped up for the most anticipated day of our whole trek. Today we have the opportunity to trek up to Gokyo- Ri on our eighth day of the trek. Waking up with shimmering gorgeous sunlight with the stunning and gorgeous aquamarine lakes reflecting the surrounding mountains, you shall have your breakfast as usual. Now as we walk alongside the Gokyo Lake which will surely give you an amazing feeling especially because you can observe the peak of Gokyo Ri from here. Looming above the village of Gokyo, we shall now climb up to the famous Gokyo-Ri on the Eastern shore of the third lake. Climbing up with the view of alpine lakes along the marvelous Himalaya glaciers, we shall make a incessant and laborious ascend to the apex of Gokyo Ri. We don’t have to hurry so we shall have a leisurely and firm climb to the summit. Upon reaching the top of Gokyo-Ri, you shall get one of the most sought after view of the Himalayas from the summit of Goky0-Ri. Trekkers are bound to get the implausible vistas of numerous mountain peaks above 8,000 meters. From the Mt. Cho Oyu (8,153m), Mt. Lhotse (8,501m), Mt. Makalu (8,475m), Mt. Thamserku (6,808m), Mt. Louche (6,145m) and to the most prominent Mt. Everest (8,848m), all can be seen soaring in the skyline from atop Gokyo-Ri. And not only that but the awe-inspiring Ngozumba glacier and the shimmering Gokyo Lakes too can be seen below us with amazing clarity from here so it shall be a moment to remember without a doubt. After gaining the overwhelming experience at the summit of Gokyo-Ri, we shall now descend back down to our lodge where we shall rest and have some food before going to bed. Stay overnight at Gokyo.

Day 09: Gokyo to Dole (4200m) 5 hrs

After our amazing ascent up to the summit of Gokyo-Ri yesterday, we have now come upon our ending phase of our trek. We shall wake up, have our breakfast and then make our journey ahead to the small community village of Dole. As we move ahead and farther away from Gokyo, initially we shall make an ascent down the previous trail which we had traversed upon in earlier phases of our trek. Walking very slowly and steadily, we shall start climbing down from the Gokyo valley to pass through the rural settlements of Machhermo. Not only that but we shall traverse past through all the previous small villages like the Luza and Lhabarma during our trek this day. Before reaching Dole village, we shall pass all the way through the “Iron Bridge” and be offered with the beautiful views of the mountains. Later after 5 hours of walking we shall reach our last destination for the day. Stay overnight at Dole.

Day 10: Dole to Namche Bazaar (3446m) 5 hrs

Waking up to the gorgeous Dole village, we shall now move to another section of our trek today. After finishing our breakfast today, we shall continue on with our descent to the next destination of our trek. We now make our way to Namche Bazaar today and in the beginning make a sharp incline to Phortse Tenga. From here onwards trekkers shall make their way through the rich and luxuriant ecosystem of intricate wildflowers and wild animals. Get amazed while you traverse all the way down to Namche Bazaar with enthralling waterfalls and the views of the Himalayan Mountains beautifully. Now moving on with our trek, we shall follow the winding trail ahead and later on we shall reach to Namche Bazaar. Upon reaching here, we shall check into our lodge and take some rest for our trek today. Stay overnight at Namche Bazaar.

Day 11: Namche Bazaar to Phakding (2610m) 5hrs

We are reaching the ending sections of our trek and then move onward to our next destination. We wake up in the Namche Bazaar and then have our warm breakfast. Afterward, we shall trek further down as we have planned to reach the village of Phakding today. Today we shall descent down along the potent Dudh Koshi River and later traverse all the way through the prosperous forest. Making our way past these forests along with incredible views we shall reach the village of Phakding after walking for about 5 hours. Stay overnight at Phakding.

Day 12: Phakding to Lukla (2840m). 3hrs

Today we shall make our last attempt to reach the airstrip at Lukla within today. Walking along the trail festooned by Buddhist prayer stones and flags we shall pass through many small settlements with traditional houses. Making our way down, we shall make our final climb of about an hour and reach Lukla which will be our ending point of this entire trek in the Khumbhu region. Stay overnight at Lukla.

Day 13: Fly back to Kathmandu and rest day

After completing our beautiful and memorable trek to the Himalayas of Everest region, we shall now take a flight back to the medieval city of Kathmandu today from Lukla. After our scenic flight over the green hills filled with rice terraces and farmers, we shall reach Kathmandu after a 35 minute flight. Upon reaching Kathmandu, you shall be transferred to your respective hotel rooms where you shall take rest. Later you may take a stroll around the Thamel area and do some souvenir shopping for your return flight back home tomorrow. Stay overnight at Kathmandu.

Day 14: Final Departure

Your Gokyo Valley Trek comes to an official end today. Therefore you shall be transferred to the airport by the representative of Adventure Master Treks & Expedition 3 hours prior to your flight.
